How to Choose an Engagement Ring — The Jabour Guide

Choosing an engagement ring is unlike any other purchase. The object is small. The weight it carries is immense. And unlike a car or a watch, a ring does not allow you to return it after a year if your taste changes — it is intended to last a lifetime, and then longer.

This guide is not about telling you what to buy. It is about giving you the framework to make a decision you will feel certain about.

Start with lifestyle, not aesthetics

The most common mistake is to begin with a stone shape or a setting style without first asking: what kind of life does this ring need to survive? An active person — someone who works with their hands, trains regularly, or spends time outdoors — needs a different ring than someone whose life is largely desk-bound. Lower settings, bezel or half-bezel, are far more protective than a high cathedral solitaire. Platinum is more durable than white gold. These are not aesthetic choices — they are practical ones, and they should come first.

Understand her style language

You do not need to know her ring size (though it helps). You need to know her visual language. Does she gravitate toward clean, architectural lines? Or does she prefer softness, organic form, something romantic? Does she favour white metals or warm ones? Is her jewellery generally minimal, or does she layer and stack? A few weeks of observation will tell you most of what you need to know.

The stone shape sets the personality

Oval stones are elongating and romantic. Round brilliants are classic — the highest light return of any shape, timeless by definition. Pear shapes are distinctive and flattering on long fingers. Cushions feel warm, slightly vintage. Radiant cuts are bold. Choose the shape that matches her, not the trend.

On budget

A ring does not need to be expensive to be right. It needs to be chosen with care. At Jabour & Co., our rings begin at £3,200 and extend to bespoke commissions above £100,000. The most important rings we have made have not always been the most expensive ones. They have been the ones where the thought behind the choice was unmistakable.

If you are uncertain where to start, we offer complimentary private consultations at our Hatton Garden atelier — in person or by video.
