DIAMOND SHAPES

Princess

Square, sharp and full of sparkle. The princess is the modern square brilliant, and one of the best values per carat of any shape.

01

The square brilliant

The princess cut is a square diamond with pointed corners, faceted as a brilliant so it sparkles strongly. A modern cut, it became popular from the 1980s and remains one of the most requested square shapes.

It also uses more of the rough crystal than a round, so for the same weight and grade a princess usually costs less.

02

Protecting the corners

Sharp corners are the princess’s weak point. Each should be held by a V-shaped claw that covers it, so that a knock lands on metal rather than diamond. Avoid any setting that leaves the corners exposed.

03

Colour and clarity

Princess cuts can show a little colour in the corners. G to H looks white in a white metal setting. Their busy faceting hides small inclusions well, so an eye-clean VS2 is usually plenty, but check that nothing sits near a corner, where an inclusion could weaken the stone.

04

Settings that suit it

A four-claw solitaire with V-claws is the classic. Princess cuts look crisp beside channel-set side stones and modern straight-sided bands. A square halo makes the centre stone look larger again.

Questions

Are princess cut diamonds cheaper than round?

Usually, for the same carat weight and grade. Cutting a princess wastes less of the rough crystal than cutting a round.

Do princess cut diamonds chip easily?

The corners are vulnerable if exposed. Set with V-shaped claws covering each corner, a princess cut is suitable for everyday wear.

What is the difference between princess and radiant cut?

Both are square or rectangular brilliants, but a princess has sharp pointed corners while a radiant has cut corners, which makes it more robust.

Does a princess cut sparkle like a round?

It is a brilliant cut and sparkles strongly, though a well-cut round still returns the most light of any shape.
