RING ETIQUETTE

What If They Don’t Like the Ring?

It happens more often than anyone admits, and it is easier to fix than most people fear. How to talk about it, and what can be done.

01

Say so, and say it early

If you are the one wearing it, it can feel impossible to say. But a ring you will wear every day for decades should be one you love, and the person who gave it almost always wants that too. Lead with what the ring means, then with what you would change: the way it sits, the metal, the size of the stone, the style.

If you are the one who gave it, try not to take it personally. The feeling behind the ring is what they said yes to.

02

What can be changed

Most dislikes can be solved without starting again:

The fit
A ring that is too loose, too tight or sits awkwardly can be resized or adjusted.
The setting
The same stone can be reset into a new design: lower, higher, a different metal, a halo added or taken away.
The band
A thicker, thinner or differently shaped band can change the whole character of a ring.
The stone
A different shape or size, with the original stone kept and perhaps set into another piece.
How it is worn
Some people move the ring to the right hand, or wear it beside a band they chose themselves.
03

Check the terms

Before you buy, read the jeweller’s terms on resizing, alterations and returns. Made-to-order rings are usually not returnable in the way stock items are, because they were made for one person, so it pays to be sure of the design before it is made. Every Jabour ring includes a complimentary first resize within 12 months of delivery.

04

Avoiding it in the first place

Find out what they love before you choose: the jewellery they wear, the rings they stop to look at, the shape and metal they prefer. Ask a trusted friend. Or design it together: with Jabour, sketches, three rounds of amendments and a full 3D model come free, so the ring can change as many times as it needs to before any metal is cut.

Questions

What if my partner does not like their engagement ring?

Talk about it kindly and early. Most dislikes can be solved by resizing, resetting the stone in a new design, changing the band or adjusting how it is worn.

Can an engagement ring be redesigned?

Yes. The stone can be reset into a new setting, in a different metal or style, keeping what matters about the original.

Can I return a made-to-order ring?

Usually not in the way stock items can be returned, because it was made for one person. Check the jeweller’s terms before buying.

How do I make sure they will love the ring?

Learn their taste before you choose, ask a trusted friend, or design the ring together.
