LATER IN LIFE

Upgrading an Engagement Ring

An anniversary, a milestone, or a ring bought when budgets were smaller. The ways to upgrade an engagement ring, and how to keep what matters about the original.

01

Why people upgrade

Many couples bought their first ring when they had less to spend, or when they were still working out their taste. An anniversary, the birth of a child or simply a moment of more freedom is often when people decide to revisit it. There is nothing unromantic about it: it is a new chapter of the same story.

02

The options

An upgrade can be as small or as large as you want:

A larger centre stone
A new stone in the same or a new setting. The original can be kept and reset elsewhere.
A new setting for the same stone
Keep the diamond that was given at the proposal and give it a new home: a halo, a three stone design, a different metal.
Add to the existing ring
A halo, a hidden halo or side stones added around the original centre stone.
Keep it and add a band
Leave the engagement ring untouched and add an eternity band or a stack beside it.
03

Keeping the original

The first ring often carries more meaning than anything that replaces it. If you upgrade the centre stone, consider giving the original a new life: set into a pendant, a pair of earrings, or a ring for a child one day. If you reset the original stone, the story stays on the hand.

04

What to ask

Whether the original stone can be safely removed and reset. Whether the existing metal can be reused or remade. How long the work will take. And whether the new design will still sit well beside the wedding band, or whether that needs to change too.

Questions

When do people upgrade their engagement ring?

Often at a significant anniversary or milestone, or when the first ring was bought on a smaller budget.

Can I keep my original diamond?

Yes. It can be reset into a new design, or set into another piece such as a pendant, so its meaning is kept.

Can a halo be added to an existing ring?

Often, depending on the design and the stone. A jeweller can assess the ring and advise.

Will an upgraded ring still fit my wedding band?

It depends on the new design. Plan the two together, and a shaped band can be made if needed.
