WEDDING RINGS

Eternity Rings

An unbroken line of stones for a love that does not end. What an eternity ring means, when it is given, and how to choose one.

01

What it means

An eternity ring is a band set with a continuous line of stones, a symbol of unending love. It is traditionally given at a significant anniversary or to mark the birth of a child, though many people wear one as a wedding band, or simply because they love it.

02

Half or full

A half eternity ring is set with stones across the top of the band only. It is comfortable, shows its stones where they are seen, and its plain underside means it can usually be resized.

A full eternity ring is set all the way round. It is the most dramatic, but stones on the underside take wear and can press against neighbouring fingers, and the ring is very difficult to resize. The size must be right before it is made.

03

Settings

How the stones are held changes the look and the wear:

Claw
Each stone held by small claws, letting in the most light. The classic look.
Shared claw
Neighbouring stones share claws, so the line of diamonds looks almost continuous.
Channel
Stones held between two walls of metal. Smooth, secure and snag-free.
Pavé
Small stones held by tiny beads, for a band that looks paved in light.
Bezel
Each stone wrapped in metal. The most protective, with a soft, modern outline.
04

Stone shapes

Round brilliants give the most sparkle. Emerald cuts, set end to end, give a clean, Art Deco line. Ovals, pears and marquises set sideways or in a pattern create something more unusual. Coloured stones, alone or alternating with diamonds, make an eternity ring entirely personal.

05

With an engagement ring

An eternity ring often sits beside the engagement and wedding rings, or replaces the wedding band in the stack. Match the metal, and check how it meets the engagement ring: a curved eternity band can follow a setting that a straight one cannot. Our bridal sets and stacking guide covers how to build a stack.
