LOOKING AFTER THE METAL

Platinum Patina

A new platinum ring is mirror-bright. A few months later it has a softer, satin glow. That change has a name, and many people come to love it.

01

What patina is

Every precious metal scratches with daily wear. When platinum is scratched, the metal is mostly pushed aside rather than removed, so the surface is reshaped rather than worn away. Over months, thousands of tiny marks blend into a soft, satin finish. That is the patina.

It is not tarnish, and it is not damage. The ring is still all there; its surface has simply changed texture.

02

Why it is different from gold

When gold is scratched, a small amount of metal is lost. Over many years, that slowly thins a band and wears down claws. Platinum’s patina is part of the reason it is valued for heirloom rings: decades of wear leave it changed in texture but largely intact.

03

To polish, or not

Some people love the patina. It looks lived in, quieter than a mirror finish, and it is a record of the life the ring has had. Others prefer the bright shine of the first day.

Either is right. A polish brings the mirror finish back whenever you want it; every Jabour ring comes with a complimentary polish. Bear in mind that each polish removes a tiny amount of metal, so there is no need to do it too often.

04

Finishes that hide it

If you like the idea of a ring that looks the same in year ten as in year one, consider a satin, brushed or hammered finish from the start. Those textures already look like a soft patina, so everyday marks blend in.

Questions

What is platinum patina?

The soft, satin finish a platinum ring develops as everyday scratches displace the metal across its surface. It is not tarnish or damage.

Does platinum scratch?

Yes, like every precious metal. But scratched platinum is mostly displaced rather than lost, which is what creates the patina.

Can platinum patina be removed?

Yes. A polish restores the mirror finish. Every Jabour ring includes a complimentary polish.

Is patina a sign of poor quality?

No. It happens to all platinum with wear, and many people prefer the softer look.
