LIVING WITH THE RING

What Not to Do While Wearing Your Ring

A ring made to be worn every day still has a few enemies. The moments to take it off, the habits that keep it safe, and the checks worth making.

01

Take it off for these

Most damage to engagement rings happens in a handful of everyday situations:

Swimming
Cold water shrinks fingers, so rings slip off easily in the sea and in pools. Chlorine and hot tubs are also hard on gold alloys over time.
The gym
Weights and bars crush claws against the stone, and a ring can press painfully into the finger. Take it off for any lifting or contact sport.
Gardening and DIY
Soil, grit and tools scratch metal, loosen claws and dull stones.
Cleaning
Bleach and strong household chemicals can damage metal and some stones. Wear gloves, or take the ring off.
Cooking and baking
Dough, raw meat and oils collect under the setting. Take it off before your hands go in.
Sleep
Claws can snag on bedding and hair, and a ring can be knocked in the night.
02

Everyday habits

Put creams, lotions, perfume and hair products on first, then the ring. They leave a film that dulls a diamond’s sparkle.

Never take a ring off over a sink, a drain or a beach. Give it a home: a small dish beside the basin and the bed, so it always goes back in the same place.

Avoid the habit of spinning or pulling the ring by its stone. It loosens the setting over time.

03

Keep it clean

For a diamond ring, warm water, a drop of neutral soap and a soft toothbrush, especially under the stone, then rinse and dry. For a ring with gemstones, the same gentle routine, and never an ultrasonic cleaner or steam. Our care guide has more detail.

Every Jabour diamond ring includes complimentary ultrasonic cleaning for the life of the ring.

04

Check it

Every few weeks, hold the ring up to your ear and tap it gently. A rattle can mean a loose stone. Look at the claws: they should sit evenly over the stone, with none bent or lifted. If anything catches on fabric that did not before, have it checked before you wear it again.

And insure it, from the day it is yours.

Questions

Can I swim with my engagement ring?

It is best not to. Cold water shrinks fingers so rings slip off easily, and chlorine can weaken gold alloys over time.

Should I take my ring off at the gym?

Yes. Weights can bend claws, damage the stone and press the ring painfully into the finger.

Can I sleep in my engagement ring?

Many people do, but claws can snag on bedding and hair. Taking it off at night is kinder to the ring.

Can I shower with my engagement ring?

Occasionally is fine, but soap and shampoo leave a film that dulls the stone, and it is easy to drop a ring in the shower.

How do I know if a stone is loose?

Tap the ring gently near your ear and listen for a rattle, and check that the claws sit evenly. If in doubt, have it checked before wearing it again.
