FIT AND COMFORT

Wedfit vs Non-Wedfit Rings

Will a straight wedding band sit flush against the engagement ring? The answer is decided by one design choice, made long before the wedding.

01

What wedfit means

A wedfit engagement ring is designed so that a straight, plain wedding band can sit flush against it with no gap. The setting is kept high enough above the band, or shaped narrowly enough beneath the stone, for the wedding band to slide right up against the engagement ring.

A non-wedfit ring has a setting that is wider or lower at the base, so a straight band will touch it only at one point and leave a small gap, or need a band that is shaped to fit.

02

The case for wedfit

A wedfit ring keeps every option open. Any straight band will sit beautifully beside it, now and in years to come, including an eternity band added later. The two rings look like a single, considered set.

03

The trade-offs

To let a band pass beneath it, the stone in a wedfit ring usually sits a little higher, so it may catch more easily than a very low setting. Some designs, such as wide halos, bezels and some vintage styles, are naturally non-wedfit, and reshaping them to fit can change their character.

04

Options for a non-wedfit ring

A non-wedfit ring is not a problem. It simply needs a plan:

A shaped band
A wedding band curved or notched to follow the outline of the setting, so the two meet along their whole length. Made to fit that one ring.
A gap
A straight band worn beside it, leaving a small space. Some people love the way each ring keeps its own outline.
A spacer
A slim band between the two that lifts the wedding band to meet the setting.
A different order
Wearing the wedding band above the engagement ring, or on the other hand.
05

Decide early

The easiest moment to decide is while the engagement ring is being designed. If you already know the kind of wedding band you want, plain, diamond-set or contrasting, the engagement ring can be designed around it. Our wedding band guide covers the choices in full.

Questions

What is a wedfit engagement ring?

An engagement ring designed so a straight wedding band can sit flush against it with no gap.

Is wedfit better?

It keeps the most options open for the wedding band. But some beautiful designs are naturally non-wedfit, and a shaped band or a small gap works perfectly well with them.

Can a non-wedfit ring be made wedfit?

Sometimes, by raising or reshaping the setting, but that can change the design. A shaped wedding band is usually the simpler answer.

Do I need to decide before the wedding?

Ideally before the engagement ring is made, so the two rings can be designed together.
