Vintage-Style Engagement Rings

Milgrain edges, old cuts, warm gold and a story. The eras that shaped vintage engagement rings, and how to bring their character into a ring made today.

01

Antique, vintage or vintage-inspired?

An antique ring is generally more than a hundred years old. Vintage usually describes a ring from a past era that is younger than that. A vintage-inspired ring is made new, with the details of an earlier period. Each has its appeal: an antique carries real history, a new ring offers modern strength, a choice of stone and a perfect fit.

02

The eras

Each period left its own signature:

EraRoughlyLook for
Georgian1714 to 1837Hand-cut old mine diamonds, closed-back settings, clusters, yellow gold and silver
Victorian1837 to 1901Romantic motifs, coloured stones, engraving, warm yellow gold
Edwardian1901 to about 1915Delicate platinum lace-work, milgrain, filigree, white on white
Art Deco1920s to 1930sGeometric lines, step cuts, calibré-cut coloured stones, platinum
Retro1940sBold, sculptural yellow and rose gold
03

The details that make it vintage

Milgrain, a fine beaded edge along the metal. Filigree, open lacy metalwork. Hand engraving on the band or gallery. Old mine and old European cut diamonds. Bezel and cluster settings. Warm yellow gold. Any one of these can give a modern ring a sense of history without making it a costume piece.

04

If you choose a true antique

Check the claws and the edges of the stones for wear, which is common after a century of life. Ask whether the ring can be resized, since some antique designs cannot. Ask for the stone to be identified independently. And budget for any restoration it needs before it is worn every day.

05

Or design one new

A vintage-inspired ring lets you choose exactly the details you love from different eras, with a stone and a fit chosen for today. An old-mine-style cushion, a milgrain edge and a slim yellow gold band can say Georgian without any of the fragility.

Questions

What is the difference between antique and vintage?

Antique generally means more than a hundred years old. Vintage usually describes a ring from a past era that is younger than that.

What makes a ring look vintage?

Details such as milgrain, filigree, engraving, old cut diamonds, cluster or bezel settings and warm yellow gold.

Are antique engagement rings durable?

Many are, but a century of wear can loosen claws or chip stones. Have an antique ring checked and restored before daily wear.

Can I get a new ring in a vintage style?

Yes. A vintage-inspired ring combines period details with a new stone, modern strength and a perfect fit.
