FROM OUR HOME SOIL

The stones of Brazil

Our house began in Goiabeiras, where craft starts with the earth itself. Brazil is one of the great coloured-stone countries of the world, and these are the stones we know best. Each one is sourced on request, for one commission.

Minas Gerais and Paraíba

Tourmaline

Brazil gives tourmaline in almost every colour, from rose to deep green. The most famous is Paraíba tourmaline, a vivid copper-bearing blue-green first found in the late 1980s in the state that gave it its name.

Hardness 7 to 7.5. Suits rings worn with a little care, in a protective setting.

Minas Gerais

Aquamarine

The sea-blue beryl. Minas Gerais has produced some of the finest aquamarine in the world, and the deepest, most saturated blue is known in the trade as Santa Maria.

Hardness 7.5 to 8. A strong, clear stone for everyday wear.

Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais

Imperial topaz

Golden to peach to pinkish orange, imperial topaz comes from very few places on earth, and the hills around Ouro Preto are the most celebrated of them.

Hardness 8, but it can split along one direction. Best set so the stone is protected from knocks.

Bahia and Minas Gerais

Emerald

Brazil is one of the world’s important emerald sources. The deposit at Carnaíba, in Bahia, found in 1963, was the country’s first significant emerald find. Inclusions are part of an emerald’s character, its fingerprint.

Hardness 7.5 to 8 with natural inclusions. Always in a protective setting, and never in an ultrasonic cleaner.

SOURCED ON REQUEST

Tell us the colour you are looking for

We do not keep coloured stones in stock. At a private consultation we talk through colour, size and how the ring will be worn, then source candidates for you and show you the stone, with its report where one exists, before you commit to anything.
