Proposal Ideas
Where to ask, when to ask and how to keep the secret. Ideas for London, at home and abroad, and the practical details that make the day go to plan.
01
Start with the person, not the place
The best proposals are not the most elaborate ones. They are the ones that could only have happened to these two people. Before you think about a location, think about how your partner likes to be surprised. Some people love an audience and will want the story told at every dinner for the next forty years. Others would be mortified by a crowd and want nothing more than the two of you, somewhere quiet, with time to take it in.
A useful test: picture the first ten seconds after you ask. If your partner would rather cry without strangers watching, keep it private. If they would want to hug the waiter, you have more room to play.
Then think about the places that already mean something. Where you met, the street you first kissed on, the restaurant you went back to every anniversary. A proposal in a place with history needs very little decoration, because the place does most of the work.
02
Proposal ideas in London
London rewards a little planning. A few ideas, from the quiet to the grand:
- Primrose Hill at sunrise
- The view south across the skyline, and at dawn you will often have the top of the hill almost to yourselves. Bring coffee and a blanket.
- Parliament Hill, Hampstead Heath
- One of the protected views of the city, with St Paul’s on the horizon. Arrive on a weekday morning or an hour before sunset for the gentlest light and the fewest people.
- Kew Gardens
- The glasshouses make a warm, beautiful setting even in winter, and the gardens are large enough to find a quiet corner in any season. Book tickets in advance.
- Sky Garden
- Free to visit, but places must be booked ahead and sell out quickly. Go for an early slot, when it is calmer, and ask at the desk whether there is a quieter spot on the terrace.
- A walk along the South Bank
- Start at Westminster and walk east towards Tower Bridge as the lights come on. Waterloo Bridge at dusk is the classic stopping point, with views both ways along the river.
- Richmond Park
- Deer, ancient oaks and long views towards the city. King Henry’s Mound has a protected view of St Paul’s through a gap in the trees.
- Columbia Road on a Sunday
- The flower market on a Sunday morning, then breakfast nearby. Fill their arms with flowers and ask on the walk home.
- A private dining room
- Many London restaurants have private rooms for two to ten. Ideal if you want the occasion without the audience, and a natural place to have family waiting afterwards.
Whatever you choose, visit beforehand at the same time of day. Check the light, the crowds, where you will stand, and where a photographer could wait without being seen.
03
At home, and why it is underrated
Some of the most moving proposals happen in the kitchen. There is no booking to miss and no stranger to interrupt, and your partner can react however they need to. Home also lets you shape every detail: their favourite meal, the music from your first holiday, a letter left where they will find it on an ordinary morning.
Ideas that work well at home: recreate your first date down to the menu. Hide the ring box in a book you have both been meaning to read. Fill a room with photographs from every year you have been together and let the last frame be empty. Or keep it as simple as two cups of coffee in bed and a question you have been holding for months.
04
Proposing abroad
A proposal on holiday has obvious appeal: a new place, unhurried days, and a story with a backdrop. The cliché destinations are clichés because they are beautiful, but the trip will mean more if the place connects to you both. Go back to where you had your first holiday, or to the country one of you grew up in.
Brazil is close to our hearts. Our name comes from the bairro of Jabour in Vitória, Espírito Santo, where the story of this house began. If you want a proposal with Brazilian light, Rio’s Arpoador rock at sunset is famous for the crowd that applauds as the sun goes down. Arrive early, and find a spot at the edge.
Travelling with the ring: keep it in your hand luggage, never in a checked bag, and keep the box separate from the ring if you are worried about it being spotted at security. Carry the receipt and certificate, and check that your insurance covers the ring abroad before you fly.
05
Choosing the date
December is widely reported as the most popular month to propose, with Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve leading the way. Valentine’s Day follows close behind. A holiday proposal has a built-in celebration with family nearby, but it also means sharing the anniversary with a festival for the rest of your lives. Some couples love that. Others would rather the date belong only to them.
Avoid days that already belong to somebody else: a friend’s wedding, a sibling’s birthday, a family occasion. And avoid a proposal at the end of a long night out. You both want to remember every second.
If you are choosing a season, late spring and early autumn offer soft light, gentle temperatures and quieter parks than high summer.
06
The ring: size, timing and secrecy
The ring size is the question everybody worries about. Borrow a ring your partner wears on their ring finger and trace the inside on paper, or press it into a bar of soap. Ask a close friend or sibling to help. If you truly cannot find out, choose a typical size: the first resize of every Jabour ring is complimentary within 12 months of delivery. Our ring size guide covers every method in detail.
Every Jabour ring is designed and made to order, so allow the time. Standard production is four to six weeks from confirmation; bespoke commissions run six to twelve. Order eight weeks before the moment you have planned and the date can stay fixed.
Hiding it: ring boxes are bulkier than they look and show through a jacket pocket. Carry it in a slim box or a small pouch, and transfer it to the proper box at the last moment. Insure the ring before the proposal, not after.
07
Proposing before the ring exists
Some people would rather choose the design together. If your partner has strong opinions about jewellery, that can be the most generous choice. Propose with something meaningful in its place, such as a letter, a family heirloom or a simple band, and then design the ring together.
Designing it together turns the ring into a shared project rather than a guess. You sit down with a designer, compare real stones side by side, and watch the drawings become a ring that is entirely theirs.
08
What to say
Keep it short. A few honest sentences about why this person, why now, and what you want your life together to look like will mean more than any speech. Write it down beforehand and read it back until it sounds like you. On the day you will forget half of it, and that is fine. The question itself is the only part that has to come out right.
Kneeling is traditional, not compulsory. Do what feels natural for you both. Then plan what happens next: a table booked, family waiting at home, or simply an evening with your phones switched off. The hour after the question is part of the proposal too.
Questions
When is the most popular time to propose?
December is widely reported as the most popular month, especially Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, followed by Valentine’s Day. A date with no other meaning has its own advantage: the anniversary belongs only to you.
Where are the best places to propose in London?
Primrose Hill and Parliament Hill for views of the skyline, Kew Gardens and Richmond Park for nature, Sky Garden for height, and the South Bank for the river at dusk. The best place is one that means something to you both, so visit at the same time of day beforehand.
How do I find out my partner’s ring size without asking?
Borrow a ring they wear on their ring finger and trace the inside on paper or press it into soap, or ask a close friend for help. If you cannot be sure, every Jabour ring includes a complimentary first resize within 12 months of delivery.
How far in advance should I order an engagement ring?
Every Jabour ring is made to order. Standard production takes four to six weeks from confirmation and bespoke commissions six to twelve. Ordering eight weeks before the proposal leaves a comfortable margin.
Can I take an engagement ring on a plane?
Yes. Keep it in your hand luggage, never in a checked bag, and carry the receipt and certificate. Check that your insurance covers the ring abroad before you travel.
Should I propose with a ring or choose it together?
Both are right. A ring you chose shows how well you know them. Designing it together suits partners with strong opinions about jewellery. Many couples propose with a meaningful placeholder and then design the ring side by side.
